Happy Tuesday from me in the studio. I really don’t want to write about the weather (again) but sitting here on my laptop working alongside my plants blowing off my balcony doesn’t feel very June, I have to say.
This month I have been busy but in a little bit of a holiday mode. I went to visit a friend in Edinburgh, and I have also been enjoying a little inspiration in London.
I visited the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, admittedly not for the first time (I think I am on my third annual pass), but it is always lovely to see the old posters, signage and tickets from London’s transport history. They have a depot open day in July, I noticed, which I have been to before and is great (if you are into trains and signage, typography and that sort of thing!). Such a lovely opportunity to delve into their poster archives, too.
I was also in the Tate Modern a couple of weeks ago and spent a little time in their three gift shops admiring all the lovely design/illustration/photography/architecture books. I was very disciplined and didn’t buy anything but I feel so lucky to have it near by as a well stocked design library.
Mama & More
I am excited to share the brand refresh for Mama & More a newsletter on Substack with
Jennifer won the competition I held back in March for the identity refresh and it has been an absolute pleasure to work on.Mama & More is a newsletter about life as a first time mum and more…featuring topics of motherhood, identity and creative expression.
Initially, I presented three designs with a variety of symbols and colour palettes that reflected the idea behind the newsletter. A favourite was then chosen and developed in line with the feedback. It was an enjoyable challenge crafting the ampersand to incorporate the ‘o’ and the moon. It was important that it was clear to read and also that it retained its elegance - something that we felt was really working from the previous iteration.
Retaining similar symbology to its predecessor, the identity features the moon hidden within the ampersand as a symbol of femininity along with the warmth of the sun and the guidance of the stars. The ampersand symbol is incorporated into the type but also with the option to be used on its own once the newsletter is more established.
Here is what Jennifer had to say about the experience.
‘It was a lovely experience to work with Kylie-Ann. She guides you through each step of the process and really listens to your wishes and feedback along the way. Her attention to detail is amazing and she is a true professional. I was super happy with the final designs she created for my Substack newsletter and the whole experience has left me with a renewed energy for finding the people my writing is intended for.’
